Description

Great Bevills is a notable late 15th century timber-framed manor house, built around 1490 by Sir Richard Waldegrave for his son. The house underwent extensive restoration in 1923, during which the north and south gable ends were rebuilt. The west front features mainly red brick herringbone nogging with some plaster infill. The gables at both ends are crowstepped and supported by octagonal piers with pinnacles. On the south end, there is a square bay with five-light brick mullioned windows, which include transoms on the ground floor. The west front has gabled wings that project slightly at the north and south ends, while the main block between the wings is jettied on the upper storey, supported by a finely carved bressummer. The house has two storeys and attics, with upper storey windows that are two and five-light mullioned casements featuring intricately carved traceried heads. The main block's windows have small high-level flanking lights, and on the ground storey, there are two five-light mullioned and transomed bays flanked by ranges of high-level lights. All windows are fitted with lattice leaded lights. A gabled porch with cut and shaped ornamental bargeboards projects from the front. The roof is tiled and adorned with several impressive chimney stacks that have octagonal shafts, moulded spur caps, and moulded bases. Inside, the house boasts finely carved and moulded beams along with many original features.
