Description

The barn range at Siam Hall is a late 17th-century structure with early 19th-century extensions and alterations. It features weather-boarded timber framing set on a red brick plinth, with roofs made of red brick, Roman tiles, pantiles, and hipped corrugated sheets. The original barn consists of seven bays, likely extended by five bays with lean-to outshuts. The main barn has a central full-height opening and three lower openings that have been cut through the frame while keeping the wall posts intact. To the right, there is an original doorway with a blocked overlight above, and to the left, a blocked pitching hole where a window once existed.

Inside, the framing includes large panels of close studding with a middle rail and curved braces. The right bay was originally floored, and a boarded first-floor rear window with diamond mullions remains intact. A window frame at the front has mortices for the mullions but has been converted into a boarded pitching hole. The partition between this bay and the main space is mostly intact. The heavy main wall posts are jowled and support tie beams with partially surviving curved braces. Collars clasp the purlins, which are reinforced with windbraces.

The left end gable wall was replaced with brick in the early 19th century when the large extension was added, although the original framing was reused as a partition between the fifth and sixth bays. The early 19th-century extension features a central full-height doorway at the front and a boarded midstrey at the rear. Lean-tos are present at the front between the two barns and along most of the rear, primarily featuring cart openings. Overall, this is a large barn range with much of the earlier framing still intact.
