Description
The Church of St Mary the Virgin is a Grade I listed building located in Edwardstone. This church, constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, features a flint and stone exterior with a tiled roof. The west tower, dating from the 15th century, has a chequer work plinth and a castellated parapet. An early 16th-century vestry was added by a clothier. Significant restoration work was carried out in 1880 by G P Bodley, who rebuilt the chancel roof. Inside, the church boasts a remarkable 17th-century octagonal pulpit with carved panels and a tester, along with a 17th-century font cover. There are also notable 17th-century wall monuments, especially those commemorating the Brand family, who were Lords of the Manor during that time. The church is situated in the grounds of the former Edwardstone Hall, which has since been demolished. It is recognized for its historical significance and internal features.
