Description

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a parish church that dates from the medieval period and has Victorian elements. It is constructed of flint with ashlar and some brick dressings, featuring plaintiled and pantiled roofs. The building includes a round western tower, a nave with a north aisle and a south porch, and a chancel. The late medieval west tower has brick window dressings that may be contemporary with the 15th-century octagonal bell-stage, which has two-light traceried bell-openings and a crenellated parapet. The nave fabric likely dates from the 12th century, with a re-set semicircular headed door in the north aisle and a lack of western quoins. There are two 15th-century two-light traceried windows in the nave. The north aisle was added in 1872 and features some re-set ogee tracery. The chancel, which is a fine example from the late 13th century, has six lancets on either side with trefoil bar traceried heads, and a Victorian plate-traceried east window. The south door is deeply moulded from the 15th century and has a four-centred arch. The north arcade, added in the Victorian era, has three bays. The chancel is distinguished by finely carved shafted divisions between the windows, which have hood-moulds with carved label stops. The nave roof, dating from the 15th century, features roll-moulded wall plates and closely spaced collared trusses.
