Description

Quaker Farmhouse is a farmhouse built in 1643, featuring vitrified headers on the north gable-end. The structure has a rendered and underbuilt timber frame, with visible wall posts and wall plates. It has returned brick gable-ends and a modern plain-tiled roof. The building is two storeys high with an attic and a three-bay frame. The central doorframe is ovolo and ogee moulded, complete with large stops. The original windows include four 5-light ovolo-moulded mullion and transom frames fitted with metal casements. There are two gabled dormers, one of which retains an original 3-light window. A narrow protective plain-tiled lean-to roof runs along the full length of the facade at first floor level. The gable-ends feature small windows with rectangular hood-moulds, most of which are blocked. The house has crow-stepped gables and gable-end stacks with paired octagonal shafts. Inside, there is an original two-newel stair opposite the entrance, and the beams are ovolo-moulded with barred and ogee stops. The original doors consist of three rebated planks clasping two very narrow fielded planks. The roof is an unusual clasped purlin design without reduced principals, featuring cambered collars, straight wind braces, and a ridge beam. It is believed that the house served as a Quaker meeting house in the late 17th century.
