Description

The Church of St Mary and St Walstan is a Grade I listed building located in Bawburgh, with a 12th-century tower, a chancel dating from around 1300, and a nave from the 15th century. The church is constructed of galetted flint, with brick and ashlar dressings, and features both pantiled and plaintiled roofs. It has a round western tower, a widened aisleless nave, a chancel, and a south porch. There is a former chapel attached to the east bay of the north wall of the nave.

The east window has three lights with Y traceries, while the south side has two cusped lancets and the north side features one simple lancet with a later single light window. The nave showcases perpendicular tracery, and there is a former rood stair to the south. The tower is topped with a conical roof and a carved wooden pinnacle, and it has late medieval bell-openings. The nave gables are crow-stepped from the 17th century.

Inside, there is a 13th-century tower arch and a 15th-century arch-braced roof, along with a Victorian arch-braced chancel roof. The heavily restored 15th-century rood screen and arch-braced rood beam are notable features, as are the four 15th-century bench ends with carved poppy heads and a fragment of a carved 15th-century bench end attached to the south wall. A 17th-century turned poor box shaped like a baluster shaft is also present, along with fragments of late medieval stained glass and a fragmentary late medieval wall painting on the west wall.
