Description
Blacksmith's Cottage is a 17th-century building that has undergone refurbishment in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed from brick, flint, and re-used ashlar, topped with a pantiled roof. Originally designed as a three-cell lobby entrance house, it was transformed into three cottages in the 18th century before being reconverted into a single dwelling in the late 20th century. There is a 19th-century extension to the side and a 20th-century extension to the rear. The building is single storey with an attic, featuring an original structure that includes an off-centre axial stack and a door that is now blocked, located opposite the stack. The facade is primarily from the 18th century, showcasing lower courses of 17th-century brick, flint, and ashlar. It has segmental arched door and window openings with polychrome voussoirs, although the door openings have been converted into windows. The cottage also features 20th-century casements and four 20th-century dormer windows. The west gable from the 19th century shows tumbling-in on the original brick, flint, and ashlar end wall, while the east gable tie ends bear the initials I.B.
