Description
The Hermit's House is a possible former dovecote associated with the now-demolished Bawburgh Hall, dating from the mid-17th century and incorporating 14th-century decorative mouldings from a demolished ecclesiastical structure. The building is square in plan and has two storeys. It features an elaborate 14th-century plinth and a blocked door on the south side, along with a large 19th-century opening with a segmental arch on the north side. The west side displays a moulded median frieze with three recessed circular medallions above it. There are blocked moulded oval windows with winged angels in the spandrels on the south and east sides. The building also has a 14th-century quatrefoil frieze and a cornice adorned with abundant foliage ornament. At the top, there is a pyramidal roof with a badly worn 14th-century pinnacle figure, possibly representing the Virgin and Child. A wall made of 17th-century brick, flint, and stone with moulded brick coping abuts the southwest corner. The Hermit's House is listed as Grade II* for its medieval remains.
