Description
Church Farmhouse is a late medieval and early 17th century building located on Church Street in Bawburgh. It features a combination of flint, ashlar, and brick on the rear wall, with the other walls constructed entirely of brick. The farmhouse has a 19th century decorative plain-tiled roof and stands two storeys tall with an attic.
An off-centre two-storey porch is an early addition to the structure. The rear wall is supported by medieval staged buttresses with ashlar dressings, which are associated with two blocked pointed windows that also have ashlar dressings and brick relieving arches. There are angle buttresses at the northwest corner. The facade includes 17th century window openings that have chamfered reveals, with 19th century mullioned and transomed frames inserted. The brickwork is made with small bricks in English bond.
The attic features three wide timber-framed gables, while a 19th century extension on the side likely replaces a 17th century outshut. The west gable has been rebuilt, and there are three 17th century polygonal chimneys on the east gable, along with an external stack added to the rear wall. Inside, there is a winding stair with a facetted timber newel opposite the entrance, and turned landing balusters in the attic. The principal beams and fireplace lintel have ogee stops, and the 17th century roof includes cambered collars, staggered butt-purlins, clasped purlins with reduced principals, and intermediate ties. A contemporary fireplace with a shallow arched head can be found in the attic.
