Description

These 18th-century kitchen garden walls enclose three sides of a rectangular area at Ketteringham Hall. They are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond. A gateway in the south-east section, dated 1886 and added for Sir Francis Boileau, is in a Renaissance style featuring a semi-circular headed arch flanked by pink stone shafts. Above the arch is a broken segmental pediment with a ball finial and pulvinated frieze. The upper part of the gate is made of decorative wrought iron incorporating acorns and oak leaves.

A gardener’s cottage is situated within the south-west angle of the walls. It dates to the late 18th century and is built of red brick with a slate roof and an octagonal plan, two storeys high with an octagonal roof. Single-bay wings, each with a hipped slate roof, project from the walls to the north-east and south-east. These wings feature recessed sash windows with glazing bars and gauged brick flat arches.

A lofted gazebo, dated 1898 and added for Sir Francis Boileau, is situated within the south-east angle of the walls. It is constructed of red brick with plain tiles and has a pyramidal roof topped with elaborate wrought iron scrollwork. A stack with a decorative shaft, a decorative head, a pointed cap of bricks and a brick dentil cornice is located on the south-east side. The ground floor features two pointed openings with stepped recesses and leaded lights, as well as a similar doorway to the north-west. The loft has two round window openings in square recesses on both sides overlooking the garden. The interior includes a fireplace to the south-east and ladder access to the loft. The exterior facades include a window to the loft with leaded lights on the south-west side and a plaque with the date 1898 and the initials FGMB on the south-east side.
