Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church dating from the medieval period. It is constructed of flint, with some Roman tiles and ironbound conglomerate, along with stone and brick dressings, and features a tiled roof. The building includes a west tower and nave, a 19th-century south porch, and an early 14th-century chancel. The round tower has a blocked doorway on the west side and deep splays to the round windows on the north, south, and west faces, with smaller round-headed windows above. The tower is topped with a brick parapet and a conical cap.

The nave consists of two bays, with the southwest quoins incorporating some Roman tiles. On the south side, there is one restored window featuring two ogee lights, a 19th-century doorway with continuous chamfer moulding, a round-headed window in deep splay, and two restored Y-tracery windows. The buttressed chancel also has two bays, with two restored windows on the south side, each containing two cusped lights and a quatrefoil in the head, and one lancet window on the north side. The east window is a three-light design from the 19th century, and the south porch is also from this period.

Inside, there are imposts to the blocked west door and moulded imposts to the tower arch. A rood stair is located in the south nave wall, and Y-tracery windows are set in blank arches. The arch-braced roof features wooden corbels with angels holding shields, and roll moulding on the corbels, with most of the restoration dating to 1895. The chancel arch is painted and is likely from the 19th century. There is a cusped piscina with a square hood mould, and some re-used bench ends are present in the chancel. A 19th-century font is also located within the church.
