Description
This is an early 19th-century granary and cart shed, situated on Barnham Broom Road, Wymondham. The building is constructed of red brick, with a weatherboarded upper section to the front, and has a dark glazed pantile roof. It comprises a three-bay cart shed with a granary positioned above. The front is open, supported by timber posts, and features an enclosed stair shaft accessed from the rear. A central cart entrance is located in the brick wall at the rear. There is a door and a two-light window on the left end, and a two-light window on the right end gable.
The interior of the granary features tongued and grooved floorboards supporting the grain floor, resting on closely spaced common joists over two heavy bridging beams. A central trap door with integral trimmers is present. An open-tread staircase leads to the grain floor, which is divided into bins with inclining timber partitions featuring chamfered rails. The roof structure includes principal rafters with collars and two tiers of butt purlins. The side walls and spaces between the rafters are carefully plastered.
The granary represents a high-quality example of a purpose-built structure, notable for its unusual separate brick-built stair shaft, the well-preserved bin divisions, and the rare presence of a rear cart entrance, likely to assist with loading and unloading via the trap door. It contributes positively to the wider farmstead group, alongside Downham Lodge Farmhouse and the barn to the west.
