Description
The Church of St Margaret is a Grade I listed building, primarily constructed in the 14th and 15th centuries, with significant restoration in the late 19th century. The church features a nave topped with an embattled parapet that includes flushwork and Perpendicular-style south windows. At the west end, there is a tower supported by diagonal buttresses, also with an embattled parapet and two-light bell-openings. The Victorian south porch incorporates a 15th-century doorway adorned with fleurons on the jambs.
A north aisle, built in 1870, is designed in the Perpendicular style, while the late 19th-century chancel showcases Perpendicular windows and a vestry added on the north side. The church has a three-bay north arcade from the 19th century and a 15th-century arch-braced roof with a moulded and crenellated wall-plate. The chancel roof, also arch-braced, was painted in the late 19th century.
Inside, there is a 15th-century font with an octagonal bowl featuring alternating shields and roses on the sides, supported by four lions at the stem. Notable monuments include a tablet for Bartholomew Cotton from 1613, which features a kneeling effigy, and a tablet for Robert Ferrier from 1767, adorned with putto heads at the foot. The church is constructed of flint rubble with stone dressings, topped with lead-clad and slate roofs.
