Description
Flordon Hall is a farmhouse dating from between 1595 and 1612, featuring the arms of Robert Kemp and Dorothy née Harris on its porch. The building has a rendered and underbuilt timber frame, with a brick porch and brick gable-ends on the wings. There is some 19th-century brick facing on the sides and rear. The roofs are covered with plaintiles and pantiles, and the structure has a symmetrical E plan, standing two storeys high with attics.
The exterior includes polygonal angle buttresses with moulded stone finials on the porch and wings. The porch features an ovolo-moulded semi-circular headed arch within an ogee-moulded flat-headed surround, topped by a moulded pediment. Most of the windows are from the 19th and 20th centuries, set beneath segmental arches, but there are three original blocked window openings in the gables with plain rectangular hood-moulds. One surviving original window on the north side has five lights, with ovolo-moulded mullions and transom, saddle bars, and some diamond glazing. Some similar blocked frames are visible only from the inside. The exterior also displays some diapered brickwork, with external stacks at the rear and side wings featuring octagonal shafts.
Inside, the hall showcases high-quality timber framing with close studding, some moulded jowls, and ovolo-moulded principal beams. There are several original doors, both panelled and planked, with decorative H hinges and catches with loop-drop handles. A staircase is located at either end of the main block, with original treads present only at the northern end. The original principal rafter roof remains intact.
