Description
Mergate Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely originated as a Lobby-Entrance type, dating from the 17th century and later. It features a rendered timber frame with thatched and pantiled roofs, arranged in a T-plan with a service cross wing. The building is one storey with an attic and primarily showcases 18th century three-light mullion and transom windows. There are two gabled dormers and one hipped dormer. The farmhouse has one off-centre axial stack, one gable-end stack, and one stack rising from the centre of the cross wing. There is an 18th or early 19th century front extension that includes sash windows with glazing bars, a dentilled cornice, and a hipped black pantiled roof. A verandah supported by cast iron columns with segmental arches adds to the character of the building. The rear has modern extensions. Inside, the original butt-purlin roofs are present, along with a pair of jointed crucks that are likely 18th century additions.
