Description

Willow Bough Farmhouse is a farmhouse that dates back to the early 17th century, with the southern half built in that period and the northern half rebuilt in the late 17th century, along with a heightening of the southern part. The structure features a timber frame that is clad with rendered wattle and daub and some clay lump, topped by a pantiled roof. It follows a lobby-entrance plan.

The east front of the farmhouse is two storeys high and has a three-window range. The windows are all early 20th century. A central sloping porch from the 20th century is flanked by a three-light casement on either side. The first floor has two three-light casements and one single-light casement. There is a ridge stack located above the door.

The south side has been largely rebuilt in the 1960s, featuring a glazed door on the ground floor and one casement window on the first floor and attic. There is a stepped external stack from the early 18th century.

On the west front, there is a full-length 19th-century outshut that includes two three-light and two one-light metal casements from the 20th century, along with two plank doors. The north return has one metal casement window on each floor.

Inside, the timber frame remains intact except for the south wall. The south room features a chamfered bridging beam with tongue stops, supported by chamfered principal studs, and chamfered joists with run-out stops. There is a wide, partly blocked fireplace beneath a chamfered bressumer and a blocked arched opening in the west wall that was once an external doorway.

The north room also has a wide fireplace under a chamfered bressumer, a chamfered bridging beam with barred tongue stops, and chamfered joists with run-out stops. There is a blocked five-light mullioned window in the west wall with glazing rebates.

A 19th-century winder staircase is located to the east of the stack, and the space to the west of the stack indicates where the original staircase was situated. The first-floor south room retains a complete set of early 17th-century floorboards and features a pair of chamfered upper crucks that support a collar, with the walls raised behind the crucks to match the height of the later northern half. The staircase landing has two blocked mullioned windows in the east wall. The north room has a complete set of late 17th-century floorboards, a plain bridging beam, and jowled corner studs, with the east window featuring an internal shutter rebate. The attic is currently inaccessible.
