Description
The Old Carrier's Arms is a former public house dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations. It is a timber-frame building, rendered on the front, with a brick gable end and a thatched roof. The building follows a through-passage plan, with a single room on each side. It has two storeys and an attic, with a four-window facade. The ground floor features two 18th-century windows with three lights and metal casements, including a transom. Two later two-light casements with glazing bars are also present. A raised and fielded panelled front door provides access. Original gable-end stacks are located on the north and south sides, with a later brick stack added to the south gable. Lean-to extensions have been built onto the rear. The roof is a fine example of a clasped purlin roof with wind bracing. An original winding stair is situated beside a stack. Original planked doors survive, with a particularly fine example on the upper floor. This door features moulded edge strips, a cover strip, a grasp handle, and latch. The timbers display stepped and nicked chamfer stops.
