Description

Swainsthorpe Hall is a farmhouse, originally dating from the early 17th century, with substantial rebuilding in the 18th and 19th centuries. The building is constructed of brick, with roofs covered in a mix of pantiles. The western block on the south side retains fabric from the 17th century; it features English bond brickwork, terminating in a stepped gable with coping bricks. A 3-light casement window from the 19th century is located on the first floor, above a later gabled extension. The gable end is lit by three 20th century casement windows, and in the gable head are the initials M.R.M. To the north of this block is an identical 19th-century replica. The east gable of the main range also dates to the 17th century, with a stepped gable, the stepping and internal stack having been rebuilt. A platband runs along the first floor. The south facade was largely rebuilt in the early 19th century. The house is two storeys and has a dormer attic. A panelled front door is located to the left of centre, sheltered by a flat hood. There is one wide 20th century casement window on each side of the door and three casements on the first floor, one dating from the 19th century and the others from the 20th. The roof is bell-shaped with a gabled form and features three hipped dormers, each fitted with casements. A ridge stack is positioned to the left of centre, and there is a partly external western gable end stack. A fire in the 17th century destroyed much of the interior detailing. One fireplace retains a plaster chimney piece dated 1654, bearing the arms of the Merchant Adventurers.
