Description
The Church of St Clement is a former parish church that is now a private chapel. It dates from the 15th and 16th centuries and is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings, topped with slate roofs. The building features a west tower, a nave, and a chancel, with a 19th-century vestry located to the north of the chancel.
The slender three-stage tower, built around 1450, has diagonal buttresses and a stair turret on the northeast corner. It includes a three-light perpendicular west window, square traceried sound-holes, and two-light belfry windows with four-centre arches, as well as a clock face on the east side. The tower is topped with a crenellated parapet that features flushwork and shields.
The nave, which was rebuilt around 1550, has three bays and is adorned with three-light perpendicular windows. The cill of the west windows has been raised to accommodate the north and south doors. The two-bay chancel also features three-light perpendicular windows with four-centre arches, and the east window has reticulated tracery. Inside, the arch-braced roof has lower braces that spring from nail-posts, while wall braces spring from the wall posts and frame the recessed window panels.
