Description

The Mischief Tavern is a former house that has been converted into a public house. It dates from the late 16th century, with additions and alterations made from the 17th century onwards. The building is constructed of flint with stone dressings and a plinth, and features 19th and 20th century brick dressings and alterations. The roofs are covered with pantiles.

The long range of the building runs along St. Clements Alley and includes rear extensions to the west and along Fye Bridge Street. The elevation facing St. Clements Alley is two storeys high with a semi-basement. It has six windows on the first floor, plus a gable-end window at the extreme left. There is a 20th century central door, and to the left, an 18th century door with a pedimented hood. A yard entry with a 17th century surround and a loading door is located at the extreme right. The semi-basement features three windows, while the ground floor has a mix of sash and casement windows. The first floor includes frieze windows and one mullion and transom window. There are three gabled dormers with casement windows, and the west gable has been partly rebuilt, featuring the initials A.T. in a stone kneeler.

The street facade was rebuilt in the 19th century due to road-widening for trams. This facade is also two storeys high and has two first floor windows. The pub front is long with end doors, and the first floor windows are mullion and transom style, with the right-hand window set in a recessed canted bay. The building has overhanging eaves cornice.
