Description
Holkham House is a former house now used as offices and flats, built in the mid-18th century by Mathew or Robert Brettingham, with a late 17th-century range incorporated at the rear to the north. The building is constructed of white brick, painted at the ground floor, and features pantile roofs. It has a U-shaped plan and stands three storeys tall with four bays, where the central two bays project forward and there are single bay wings on either side. The entrance is off-centre, featuring a door with a round arch and keystone. The doors in the wings have eared moulded surrounds with fanlights in the right wing. The ground floor has fixed lights with glazing bars and semi-circular arches, while the first floor features sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches. The outer central bays have round arches and top sashes, and the second floor has casement windows. A heavy parapet crowns the two central bays, with half-pediments on both the left and right. The wings have open pediment gables. Inside, there is a fine over-mantel with an inset panel painting and a plasterwork ceiling in the first-floor room of No. 16.
