Description

Geoffrey the Dyer House is a house dating from the 16th century and later, constructed of brick, Quaternary flint, and chert, with a pantile roof. It has an L-shaped plan and stands two storeys tall. The south front features six bays of flint, accented with brick bands. There is a six-panel door with a segmental arch located in the third bay, with a blocked window above it. To the left of the door, there is a flint plinth with a blocked brick arch leading to a cellar that has been filled in. The ground floor has 18th-century square-headed sash windows, some of which have glazing bars, and these are set under segmental arches. To the right of the door, there is a brick plinth with 19th-century casements, and a 20th-century door in the fifth bay. The right-hand gable wall is made of flint and 16th-century brick, featuring a single-storey lean-to. The left-hand gable wall is also flint, with parapet gables and a single-storey lean-to at the rear. The left-hand return range is brick with some diapering, and it includes a 19th-century shop window and 19th-century casements.

Inside, the ground floor room to the left of the door bay has a very high ceiling. The spine beam spans the second to fourth bays and features double roll moulding and two hollow chamfers, with the joists laid flat. There is a brick four-centred arch leading to an out-shut at the rear, and it is said that there was once a wooden four-centred arched doorway to the outside at an upper level, although there is no external evidence of this now.
