Description
The James Davies Monument is a headstone located in Cromer Old Cemetery, dating from around 1894. It is made of carved stone and features slightly narrowed sides. At the top, there is carved foliage that leads to a band decorated with rosettes, with a pointed arch top framing a relief carving of a sailing boat.
The inscription commemorates James Davies, who lived from 1826 to 1893, and his wife, Ann, who died in 1907. James Davies served as the coxswain of the Cromer lifeboat, and it is likely that the relief carving depicts this lifeboat.
This headstone is a notable tribute to the coxswain of a sailed and rowed lifeboat, which is likely represented in the relief carving. It is part of a group that includes the listed chapel and three other listed headstones in Cromer cemetery.
