Description
Knapton Hall is a house that was used as a hotel at the time of listing, built around 1800. It is constructed of rendered and whitewashed brick with a roof made of black glazed pantiles. The building has two storeys and features three bays that are divided by four giant pilasters with moulded capitals, which support a cornice and parapet. Square pinnacles rise above the pilasters and end in ball finials. The side bays are designed as two-storey bow windows with sash windows that include glazing bars, with each of the three sashes separated by pilaster strips. The central entrance has a half-glazed door beneath a fanlight set in a rectangular opening, with a sash window above it that also has glazing bars. On the first floor, there is a glazed wrought iron verandah supported by circular verticals that curve to mimic the undulations of the facade. The roof of this section is obscured by the parapet, and there are two stacks symmetrically placed. A mid-19th century rendered brick extension is located at the rear, featuring a hipped roof of black glazed pantiles. All the windows have been replaced with 20th-century versions.
Inside, the staircase has a wreathed and ramped handrail supported by fluted balusters, with two balusters for each tread. The tread ends are scrolled, and the balustrade returns to form a gallery over the doorway.
