Description

The Church of St Andrew is a parish church containing elements from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries, with a 19th-century restoration in 1878. It is constructed of flint with ashlar dressings, with the nave rendered, and has thatched roofs. The church features a three-stage tower, which appears undifferentiated externally; it has diagonal stepped west buttresses rising to the ringing chamber. A C19 three-light transomed west window is present along with chamfered belfry windows and a crenellated parapet. The west nave windows are two-light and cusped, with the north window blocked. A two-story south porch has a wave-moulded arched entrance below triple statuary niches, the central niche with an ogee head. The north nave doorway is also wave-moulded. The south chancel has restored two-light Y tracery windows, a lancet, and a Priest’s door. The east window is a three-light stepped lancet. Inside, the wave-moulded tower arch rests on circular responds with polygonal bases and capitals. The hollow chamfered chancel arch similarly features responds with polygonal bases. The nave has a boarded C19 roof with principal rafters and arched braces. A C15 octagonal font is supported by four lions sejant, and decorated with angel and animal heads, rosettes, and shields. An Early C17 faceted pulpit stands on four legs, with strapwork panels and arcading. A reading desk, also Early C17, is similarly arcaded. A C15 screen of two bays, with ogeed tracery, separates areas of the church. Fragments of painted saints are visible on the north and south walls. A C19 boarded roof covers the chancel, and a C13 trefoiled piscina with a hood mould can be found alongside plain bench sedilia.
