Description

This is a farmhouse, built in 1799 for John Savory, with alterations in the 19th century. It is constructed of brick with a corrugated tile roof and comprises a three-bay main range with a two-story wing to the rear. The symmetrical south facade features a rendered string course above the first floor, rising to a pediment above the central bay. Shaped gables are present. Dormers with terracotta Maltese crosses are found in the first and third bays, each containing a four-pane flush sash window. Recessed panels of full height flank the first and third bays, formerly displaying wide windows with segmental heads, now with renewed flush sashes and glazing bars. The central entrance features a four-panelled door with a semi-circular fanlight containing radiating glazing bars, set within a recessed panel with a segmental head. A lunette with glazing bars is set within the pediment above. A dentil cornice crowns the building and gable end internal stacks are present. Inserted semi-circular headed fixed lights are visible on the ground floor of the left return, alongside a flush sash with glazing bars on the right return. The attic has semi-circular headed four-pane fixed windows in the left and right gables. A lower two-story rear wing, three bays wide, has a central axial stack and a hipped roof. A projecting bay in the east facade of the rear wing has a tripartite sash window to each floor, with the ground floor window being larger and repositioned. A door with a 20th-century classical doorcase is located to the right. Two first-floor sashes with glazing bars are also present on the rear wing. The west facade features a large tripartite flush sash window to the ground floor left, with four tall narrow sash lights to the right, both under segmental arches. Similar arches are currently housing smaller sash windows with glazing bars on the first floor. A single-story addition with a hipped roof extends to the north. Inside, a stone floor is present in one room, and a dogleg staircase has an open string, a ramped pine handrail, square sectioned balusters, and a turned newel. A fireplace in a room to the west has a pair of downward tapering fluted columns on either side, with twisted reeded bases and neckings, and volutes. The dining room at the east of the rear wing contains a white marble reeded fireplace incorporating reliefs of baskets of flowers. Reeded fireplaces are also found on the first floor. A coved ceiling is present in the front and rear of the stairwell in the attic. The kitchen in the rear wing has a fireplace approximately 3 meters wide, with a shelf above.
