Description
The Aylmerton War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1921. It is made from limestone and takes the form of a Latin cross. At the crossing of the front (west) elevation, there is a carved sword and laurel wreath. The shaft of the cross is tapered and stands on a square plinth and a square-plan base.
On the front elevation of the plinth, the following text is carved in relief: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN MEMORY OF THE / MEN OF AYLMERTON / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE GREAT WAR / (4 NAMES)’. The north elevation features the dates ‘1914-1918’ carved in relief, while the east elevation has the dates ‘1939-45’ along with five names of the fallen. The south elevation bears the inscription: ‘GREATER LOVE HATH / NO MAN THAN THIS / THAT A MAN LAY / DOWN HIS LIFE FOR / HIS FRIENDS’.
The memorial is located within the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist, which is listed as Grade II*, and is positioned adjacent to the south approach from Church Road.
