Description

The Ludham War Memorial Cross stands in the churchyard of St Catherine’s Church, overlooking Stocks Hill and opposite other historic buildings. It was erected as a memorial, likely in the years following the First World War. The memorial consists of a polished red granite wheel-head cross mounted on a tapering plinth, which in turn sits on a single-stepped red granite base and a three-stepped concrete base. The plinth is inscribed with a primary dedication “TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN PROUD AND TENDER MEMORY OF/ (11 NAMES)/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1918.” A later inscription, commemorating the Second World War, is located to one side of the plinth and reads “1939 – 1945/ (4 NAMES).”
