Description

The Potter Heigham War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1919, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of rock-faced granite and is located in the churchyard of the Church of St Nicholas, which is listed as Grade I. The memorial stands on the west side of the path leading to the church’s south porch and features a rock-faced Latin cross atop a trapezoidal plinth. The plinth has polished surfaces on three of its four sides for leaded inscriptions, and it is supported by a single-step base on a concrete foundation.

The east side of the plinth and base bears the First World War dedicatory inscription in leaded letters, which reads: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / THE GIVER OF VICTORY / THIS CROSS WAS ERECTED AD1919 / IN SACRED MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF THIS PARISH / WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE / GREAT WAR / AND WHOSE NAMES ARE HEREON INSCRIBED / AND IN HONOUR OF / ALL WHO SERVED IN THE FORCES / ON LAND OR SEA / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE’.

The south side of the plinth is inscribed with ‘1914 – 1918’ and lists the names of seven local servicemen who died during the First World War, including one who accidentally drowned while on leave. The north side of the plinth features the inscription ‘1939 – 1945 / WORLD WAR’ along with the names of three local men who died during that conflict.
