Description
The Monastery is a former monastic grange that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the early 16th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed from flint, chert, and brick, topped with a thatched roof. Originally, it was designed as an open hall house and is now two storeys high.
The west front features two central half-glazed doors, flanked by two segmental-headed casements on the ground floor and three on the first floor, all of which are details from the 20th century. The gabled roof has gable heads supported on kneelers, with internal gable end stacks. At the rear, there is a gabled cross wing that is one storey tall with a dormer attic, which was formerly the hall. This wing has one door and two segmental-headed casements on the ground floor, all from the 20th century, along with two dormers beneath eyebrow thatching. The east gable head is set on brick kneelers.
Inside, the hall is accessed through two four-centred brick arches, one of which has been converted into a window. These arches feature double hollow mouldings. There is also an arched and hollow moulded brick piscina located on the ground floor of the original hall. The ceiling has chamfered bridging beams, likely added in the 18th century. The north-south range roof consists of ties and collars, linked by jowled Queen posts, with many timbers having been renewed. The crown post roof over the hall was removed when this wing was floored.
