Description
Antingham War Memorial is located in the churchyard of St Mary’s Church on Church Lane in Antingham, North Norfolk. It is prominently positioned by the path leading to the church. The memorial features a wheel-head cross on a plinth, which has a smooth front face displaying inscriptions in leaded lettering. A separate step at the front foot of the cross bears the dedication for the Second World War.
The memorial lists four names from the First World War and two from the Second World War. Among the First World War names is a Military Cross winner, who was the Rector’s son, and to whom an oak reredos was dedicated inside the church in 1924.
The inscription on the plinth reads: "LEST WE FORGET/ TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOURED MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF ANTINGHAM/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919/ FOR ENGLAND, HOME, AND FREEDOM / (NAMES) / THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The Second World War inscription states: "1939 – 1945/ (NAMES)/ WE WILL REMEMBER THEM."
