Description
The Tun House, located approximately 25 meters west of the Malt Kilns and Brewery, is a storage building from a former brewery, dated 1814. It is constructed of brick and flint and features a hipped pantile roof with a central lantern. The building has a square shape, with gault brick on the west and south sides, rusticated bands at the base, battered walls, and an oversailing cornice.
The west facade includes two semi-circular headed panels made of pebble flint, with a string course at the impost level and brick central and clasping pilasters. There is a cast iron plaque in the central spandrel inscribed with "W H/1814," referring to William Hardy, who lived from 1770 to 1842. The south facade is made of pebble flint and features red brick oversailing cornices. The east facade, facing the brewery yard, is made of red brick with dressings that have curved angles in header bond, and it has a large opening that has been renewed. There is also a high lunette opening on the north side for a pigeon loft.
Inside, the roof has been renewed, and there are thick internal buttresses at the angles. The Tun House was formerly connected to the kilns by a range of buildings of the same age, which were destroyed by fire in 1936.
