Description

Thorpland Hall is a 16th-century building that was restored between 1830 and 1836. It is constructed of flint with brick and terracotta dressings, and features elements of Lincolnshire Limestone. The roof is covered with black glazed pantiles and has crow-stepped gable ends adorned with octagonal moulded brick finials at the corners. Originally, the gables were moulded but not crow-stepped. The hall has two storeys and an attic, with five bays.

The early to mid-19th century windows are five-light moulded mullion types with dripmoulds. A moulded stucco stringcourse and a coved eaves cornice add to the architectural detail. The off-centre three-storey tower porch has brick octagonal corner buttresses and was originally gabled but was crenellated in the early to mid-19th century. The porch features a four-centred arch doorway. There are four impressive brick chimney stacks with decorated terracotta shafts topped with stars.

The building has two 19th-century gabled dormers and was extended at the rear during the 19th century, which includes two small rear wings and a domestic wing to the northeast. This wing and the yard to the west are enclosed by an embattled wall made of flint and brick, featuring two terracotta finials likely taken from the rear of the house during the 19th-century extension.

Inside, the hall has a Gothic interior dating from 1830 to 1836, highlighted by a fine Gothic staircase with embattled newels. The dining room, panelled in 1865, features some linenfold panelling that was probably salvaged from the original interior.
