Description
The F.H. Chambers Memorial, located approximately 50 meters southwest of the south porch of the Church of St. Catherine in Ludham, was created around 1912 by the architect C.F.A. Voysey for the family of Frank Harding Chambers. This memorial is made of stone ashlar and features a square-sectioned pillar that has a very slight taper, culminating in a two-centred arched top adorned with small reliefs resembling miniature bell-cast gables on either side. At the top front and back, there is an incised gouge-cut serif cross that retains traces of gold paint, and it is separated from a finely cut inscription below by a similarly incised string. The inscription commemorates Frank Harding Chambers, who died in 1912, and his wife, Mary Alice, who died in 1945. Frank Harding Chambers was a master at Charterhouse and a colleague of Voysey's wife. This memorial is a high-quality, simple work by a prominent architect of the Arts and Crafts movement and is part of a group with the Church of St. Catherine.
