Description
The Goods Office of the former Wisbech and Upwell Tramway is a tramway goods office built around 1883. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a slate hipped roof with deep eaves. The building has a small rectangular plan, likely a single cell, with its entrance located at the south end facing the road.
It is a single-storey structure with no windows on the north end, but it has a central doorway with a segmental arch and a 19th-century four-panel door. On the west side, there are two segmental arch window openings with stone cills, each fitted with 16-pane metal frame windows. The north end and east side of the building are blind.
The interior has not been inspected. This goods office is the last remaining of a series of offices associated with the Wisbech and Upwell Tramway, which was authorized in 1882 and built by the Great Eastern Railway. This tramway was the last part of a larger system, providing a rail link between Wisbech and the Outwell-Upwell area along a 7 3/4 mile stretch beside the Wisbech to Outwell Canal. It was described as a mix between a railway and a tram, using wagons and small locomotives that ran across and alongside roads and canals, primarily serving agricultural purposes. The line ceased passenger services in 1929 and closed completely in 1966. Notably, Reverend W Awdry, the author of 'Toby the Tram Engine', was once the vicar of Emneth, a parish through which the tramway ran.
