Description

Snettisham House is a house dating from the 18th century, with alterations and additions made in 1863 and 1883. It may incorporate elements of an earlier house occupied by the Cobbe family from the mid-16th century to the 19th century. The north and west facades are rendered with stucco, gault brick, and red brick returns; the roofs are slated and tiled. The north front has two storeys and three bays in the centre, flanked by two single-bay gabled cross wings. The style is Gothic. The centre section features two sash windows on the ground floor and a central gabled porch with a Gothic arch. The cross wings have one ground floor and one first floor three-light casements. The house has kneelers and a coped parapet, with two ridge stacks in the centre. The east return of the east cross wing is of 19th-century gault brick, while the south gable return of the same wing is of carstone, brick, and squared stone quoins, partly rendered, indicating possible evidence of an earlier building. The west return to the garden has two storeys with attics and features two ground floor and two first floor tripartite sashes with glazing bars. A central door provides access. There are two attic dormers on the south side. The west return also reveals a two-storey, three-bay block with attics, stuccoed on the west face, with an 18th-century red brick south gable and east return.
