Description
The remains of St. Mary's Priory, also known as Broomsthorpe Priory, are the remnants of an Augustinian priory founded at St. Mary's Church in East Rudham and relocated here in 1215. The structure dates from the 13th and 15th centuries and is built from flint with stone dressings.
Notable features include the north crossing arch of the church, which is attached to part of the north chancel wall, and a detached chancel at the north-east angle that has buttresses. The internal elevation of the crossing features a double chamfered arch with a wall inserted in the 15th century, along with an upper window that retains some tracery. The chamfered respond half pier of the north crossing arch is also significant.
The chancel's north wall has a two-storey internal elevation with a blocked ground floor arch and two blocked first-floor arches, one infilling the other, all dating from the 13th century. The detached north-east angle showcases stone-dressed quoins and set-offs.
