Description

Abbey Farmhouse is a farmhouse that incorporates fragments of the Augustinian Priory of St. Mary and St. Nicholas. It dates from the medieval period and the 18th century. The building features squared, coursed stucco render on stone rubble and brick, with slated roofs. It has three storeys and five bays. The ground floor includes three sash windows with glazing bars and one tripartite plate glass sash. The first and second floors each have five sash windows with glazing bars. There are two end pilasters, and the Doric porch has two brick columns, two wooden antae, a wooden entablature, a cornice, and a flat roof. The doorcase is notable for its three panel reveals and two panel soffit, all raised and fielded, along with an arched fanlight with glazing bars and a six-panel raised and fielded door. The eaves cornice features wooden dentils. The roof is shallow pitched with hipped gables, and there are two end stacks, one ridge stack, and one rear eaves stack. The south gable has a ground floor pointed arch framed with a second arch, a first floor pointed arch door framed with a second arch, and another first floor pointed arch door, indicating it was part of the domestic range of the Priory. The massive stack on the west side and a buttress on the north gable add to the structure's character. The interior has not been seen.
