Description

The Crown Inn is a public house dating from the 18th century, located on Gayton Lynn Road. It is constructed of colourwashed brick with some flint and features plain mottled tiles. The building has five bays plus chimney bays and is 1½ storeys high. There is an axial stack located in the chimney bay between bays 2 and 3, along with a right end chimney bay and an internal stack. The first floor of bays 3 to 5 is finished in flint, with a platband between bays 3 and 4. There is a blocked doorway in bay 1, a double-leaved door in the chimney bay, and a doorway with a wide gabled wooden porch and slate roof to the left of bay 5. The ground floor features 3-light casements with glazing bars in bays 2 to 5, while the first floor has five double casements. The left return has a flush ground floor sash window with glazing bars.

Inside, there is an axial stack between bays 2 and 3 and a single room addition at the rear of bay 3. This addition includes a sash window with a reeded surround and glazing bars, and a shelved cupboard in the left angle featuring a conch head with a sun face and rays, as well as semi-circular shelves and a semi-circular headed classical surround with reeded jambs. The fifth bay has ogee stepped principal beams and a fireplace decorated with Dutch tiles.
