Description
The detached porch in the courtyard of Hunstanton Hall is a former entrance to the 16th-century range of the hall, dated 1618. It became free-standing after a fire in 1855. Built for Sir Hamon Le Strange, 3rd Baronet, the porch features stone, chequerwork stone, and flint in the attic, with brick internally. The returns are made of coursed carstone with galleting, clunch, and brick rubble. It is designed in a Jacobean Mannerist classical style, supported by two Tuscan Doric columns on bases. The central arch includes a keystone, and the entablature and frieze project forward over the cornice, adorned with two strap work obelisks featuring masks. The attic displays a diamond pattern of chequerwork flint and stone, with a central stone coat of arms and the motto 'Mihi Parta Tuere'. The parapet cornice is raised in the center, featuring a shell hood and the date 1618, along with a stone finial with a roundel above and at both ends.
