Description

The Lord Nelson Public House is an 18th-century establishment with some evidence of earlier construction from before 1700 on its facade. It is built from colourwashed clunch and flint, featuring brick dressings and a red pantiled roof. The building is two storeys high and has two windows on each floor. The ground and first floors each contain two plate glass sash windows with a single glazing bar division. A central part-glazed door, dating from around 1930, is located under a bracketed hipped canopy. Above the door, there is a blocked 17th-century brick-dressed window, with stitching visible from the 17th-century openings on one ground and two first-floor windows. The building has brick end quoins, a dentil eaves cornice, and coped parapets with end stacks. There is a lean-to on the east gable, with a clunch gable above. The rear is flint with brick dressings, while the west gable is brick with tumbling. It is reputed that Captain Nelson Hardy dined here in 1793 when he was recommissioned on active service as Captain of HMS Agamemnon.
