Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church built in 1858 by Higham and Robinson. It features carstone slips and Bath stone dressings, with slate roofs. The structure includes a west steeple, a nave, a south aisle, and a chancel. The tower is square and has three stages, with diagonal buttresses at the first stage. It has a two-light plate tracery west window and two-light louvred belfry windows, topped by a leaded broach spire. The south aisle has flat buttresses and two or three-light lancet windows. At the east end of the aisle, there is a vestry with a chimney that abuts the east gable of the nave. The chancel features lancet windows, with a triple stepped group on the east and paired windows on the flanks. The north nave is illuminated by three two-light plate tracery windows. A gabled north porch was added in 1904, which includes flushwork side parapets and low diagonal buttresses, along with cinquefoiled side lancets. Flushwork panels flank an arched opening below a statuary niche depicting the Virgin and child.

Inside, there is a four-bay south arcade supported by circular piers on chamfered plinths, with moulded capitals that hold double chamfered arches. The roof features arched braces on corbels extending to collars, with ashlaring and two tiers of plain through purlins. The south aisle roof is similar, with corbels that have head carvings. There is a double chamfered tower arch and a double chamfered chancel arch on semi-circular responds. The chancel screen is adorned with flowing tracery, and the chancel roof is scissor braced.
