Description

The Gables is a house, originally an inn, dating back to the late 16th and early 17th centuries. It is constructed primarily of brick, with pantiles and plain tiles covering the roof, and is arranged in an L shape around a stair turret.

The north range of the house has three bays and two storeys. It is faced in galleted carstone with brick dressings, a brick platband, and a pantile roof. A Dutch gable faces the road to the west, while the east end has a gable parapet with end internal stack. A C19 stack has been inserted behind the facade of the third bay in this range. The ground floor has large openings with segmental arches to the left and right; the left opening has a renewed 4-light casement with glazing bars, the right is partly blocked by a C19 stack and contains an inserted sash with glazing bars. The centre bay has a doorway with a boarded door, and an inserted casement with glazing bars. The first floor has a 3-light casement with glazing bars to the first bay, a double casement with glazing bars to the centre bay, and a blocked opening to the third bay with a C19 stack to the rear.

The west facade, facing the road, features a Dutch gable and a hipped roof to the right. A C19 canted bay with a flat roof and sashes has been built into the ground floor on the right side, and there is a blocked opening on the left. The first floor has a central flush sash, and blocked openings to the left and right. The attic has two blocked openings. The west range to the road has four bays (originally two cells) and a hipped tiled roof with a central axial stack. The ground floor features a doorway to the left with a coped canopy supported by shaped wooden brackets, a tripartite sash, and three sashes with glazing bars. The first floor has four sashes.

The rear of the north range now abuts the west range, with a doorway dating back to about 1600, featuring a heavy, jewel-stopped frame. A similar doorway leads to the rear of the west range towards the stair turret.

Inside, the north range has a 3-tier butt purlin roof with collars, but no ridge piece, while the roof of the west range has been renewed. A doorway between the north range and the stair turret shows a 2-light opening with an ovolo moulded frame, and a doorway with a heavy moulded frame and jewel stops. A similar doorframe with reeded mouldings connects to the west range from the stair turret. The third bay of the north range has close ceiling joists and a rear arch to a blocked opening. The ground floor has nicked ogee stopped beams to the third bay of the north range, while the west range has fireplaces to each cell, dropped rear arches to late windows, and an ogee stopped beam to the first cell. A newel stair has winders and boarded panelling below the handrail.
