Description
The West Dereham War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected between 1919 and 1939, with the architect remaining unknown. It is made of carved granite and features a Celtic cross topped with a longsword carved in relief, positioned point downwards, on a low, rough-hewn plinth. This plinth is set on one granite step, which is placed on another step made of granite setts.
The memorial is enclosed by a low iron railing attached to four granite corner posts, all sitting on a platform of granite setts and concrete. The base of the cross bears an inscription in leaded letters that reads: "GREAT WAR. / 1914 – 1919. / SACRED / TO THE MEMORY / OF THE / GALLANT FALLEN / FROM THIS PARISH." The plinth below lists the names of the Fallen in two columns separated by a cross. Additionally, a polished granite slab inscribed "1939 – 1945 / NAMES" commemorates those who fell in the Second World War and appears to rest against the main structure of the memorial.
