Description
Carpenter's Yard Barn is a barn built in the mid-18th century, designed in the style of William Kent. It features Flemish bond red brick and smut pantiles. The structure has a two-storey Greek cross plan with single-storey infilling wings that create a rectangular shape. The west front includes a two-storey gabled center with two ground floor segmental arched boarded window openings. There is a central entrance bay that is recessed under a semi-circular arch, which has boarded infilling and a segmental arched boarded door. A first-floor platband runs across the front, topped by a pedimented gable with a moulded base and verges, and a central brick round arched oculus. The angles of the Greek cross plan have single-storey ranges with roofs hipped at the corners. On the north side, there are two segmental arched windows and a central segmental arched door on both the north and south ranges. The facades of these ranges share similar details, although there are variations in the windows. Some moulded brick cornices are still visible, and the west range is partly unroofed. The barn appears as a block plan in the 1750 edition of Isaac Ware's Plans of Houghton.
