Description
Stokesby with Herringby War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, with additions for the Second World War. It is situated in the churchyard of St Andrew’s Church on Filby Road in Stokesby, Norfolk. The memorial features a tall pillar topped with a hipped cap, with rusticated dressing on the sides and relief carvings that include a cross, sword, foliage, and national flowers. The front of the pillar has inscriptions related to the First World War, while the stone base, which rests on a concrete foundation, bears inscriptions for the Second World War.
The incised inscription reads: "THIS MEMORIAL WAS ERECTED BY THE RESIDENTS OF STOKESBY WITH HERRINGBY IN LOVING MEMORY OF THE FOLLOWING BRAVE MEN WHO SACRIFICED THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 (NAMES) GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS ALSO OF (NAMES) WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939 – 1945."
