Description

This is a terrace of houses, built between 1844 and 1847, and partly now used as a hotel. The houses are constructed of Gault brick, with some areas stuccoed and colourwashed. They have a slate roof. Each house is three storeys high, with a basement, and typically features a two-window range, incorporating a doorway and either a three-storey canted window bay (Nos. 28-36) or a two-storey canted window bay (Nos. 37-41). A cast-iron balcony is present at the first floor level of the canted bays, supported by pierced iron brackets. The original doors were of two vertical panels. The doorcases are plain, except for Nos. 35 and 36 which have Corinthian pilasters. The window openings originally contained 2/2 unhorned sashes on the ground floor and second floor, with French doors leading onto the balconies. Those houses with the full-height canted bays have a combination of 3/6 and 2/2 unhorned sashes on the second floor. Original doors remain in Nos. 25, 26, 28 and 30, and some original windows remain in Nos. 26, 27, 28, 30 and 36. The roof is gabled and punctuated by ridge stacks at intervals. The interior includes a stick-baluster staircase with a ramped and wreathed handrail.
