Description
The Carlton Hotel, comprising numbers 1 to 5, is a terrace of houses that has been partly converted into a hotel. It was laid out in 1841 as the first section of the Victoria Building Company's estate, designed under the guidance of Thomas Marsh Nelson. Number 5 was built by John Brown in 1850. The building is constructed of stuccoed brick with slate roofs and consists of four storeys above a basement. The Carlton Hotel occupies a corner site that extends into Albert Square.
The terrace features a rusticated ground floor with entrance porches supported by unfluted columns. The elements facing east are symmetrical, although number 4 includes a 20th-century attic storey. The building has rusticated quoins and cast-iron balcony railings on the first floor. The windows on the first floor are 6/6 sashes and include French doors leading to the balcony, with some windows adorned with pediments, while number 5 has segmental pediments. Number 5 is distinguished by its three bays, with two canted window bays on the ground floor and a panelled parapet. Numbers 2 and 8 feature Venetian windows on the first floor. The roofs are gabled and hipped, with transverse stacks.
Inside, the Carlton Hotel spans numbers 1 to 5 and has plain interiors that were altered in the 20th century. A staircase with an open well rises to an oval dome, featuring two turned balusters per tread.
