Description
These are four terraced cottages on Chapel Street, dating from the 18th century. A single-storey extension was added to the rear of number 5 in the 20th century. Each house originally had one window and a door to the front, although some windows at first floor level have been blocked up. The original windows are 18th-century casements with mullions and transoms, set within segmental brick arches, and have leaded lights in the central window. A six-panel door is found at number 7. Some windows are replacements from the 19th century, and others are 20th-century additions to the front and rear. The eaves feature brick dentil details, and there are central axial and gable stacks. Parapet gables are present, with brick tumbling. Inside number 9, there is a 19th-century cast iron fireplace with a lugged fire surround. Wrought-iron railings and gates are set on cast iron posts. Due to the unusually high ceilings and wide window proportions, it is thought these cottages may have been weavers' cottages, designed to accommodate the installation of looms.
