Description
The gates and piers to the Village Hall in Old Catton were built in the late 19th century and are made of wrought iron and stone. The gates feature an overthrow composed of two bifurcated scrolls that contain the monogram SGB. Below this, there is a frieze decorated with rosettes, and at the base, the railings have iron twist finials at the top and above the dog rail. The stone piers are rusticated, with bases and pedimented caps that hold wrought iron octagonal lanterns. These gates were created for Samuel Gurney Buxton, who lived from 1866 to 1909, by G Badcock, a smith from Catton Hall, whose name is inscribed on the hinges. The gates and piers are included for their group value with Catton Hall.
